The Reserve Semi finals were played at Royal Canberra a few hours after moving day at the Masters. The Semi finals saw Federal playing Goulburn and Gold Creek playing Yass; with three of the four finalists unbeaten through the round robin.
Federal vs Goulburn
The match commenced on the Brindabella course, playing the links side with a strong wind across the exposed section of the course. Goulburn got off to a flyer, with the lead in five matches after six holes. The encounter was still in the balance after nine holes with one big lead to each team – Sam Shadbolt at 7 for Federal and Adam Cousins playing 6 for Goulburn; and the other matches all within 2 holes. Goulburn maintained their control of the match with Federal’s Will Brearley the only match ahead.
Sam Shadbolt completed his match on the 13th, closing out Bradley Mitchell 6/5. Adam Cousins was next to finish with a 6/5 win over the previously unbeaten Rory Ardlie. Dominic Falk playing at 5 closed out Steve Wyatt 3/2 after driving through the 16th for a well deserved win.
The matches at 3 and 4 played down 15 with Ryan Day at 4 for Goulburn finishing his match with eagle, birdie to defeat Glen Collins 3/2. Will Brearley was dormie 2 on the 17th tee, and watched as Rob Croker knocked a great tee shot to 2m. Will responded with a shot inside 1m. Both players holed the putts and Federal claimed its second point, but required both the 1 and 2 matches to win the encounter.
After 2 great drives down 16, Pat Smith from Goulburn playing at 1 and Kasey Cathcart missed short birdie putts to leave Pat one up with 2 to play. Wally Gregory, playing 2 for Federal birdied 16 to take a one hole lead over Tom Antony. Tee shots were fired down 17 by the final two pairs and only Tom Antony hitting the green. He then promptly birdied the hole to draw square.
Meanwhile, Kasey at 1 for Federal had a difficult up down from through the green to a back right flag, and Pat Smith had the advantage from the right side of the green. Pat chipped to four feet and then holed a good putt to defeat Kasey Cathcart 2/1 to give Goulburn the match. Tom and Wally shook hands for a half with the result sealed.
It was an impressive win by Goulburn, who controlled the match from the outset and closed out a strong Federal side.
Gold Creek vs Yass
In the second final, Gold Creek defeated Yass 4-3. Yass were unfortunate to play without one of their team who was injured in a rugby match Saturday and required surgery.
Gold Creek had wins from Jamie Rek 2/1, Ken Meikle 1 up, Murray Widdeson 3/2 and Ross Rees 4/3; whilst Tim Smith, James Stanford and Lachlan Kemp won for Yass.
Next week sees Gold Creek and Goulburn play the Reserve Final at Royal – Yarralumla Course.
