Steve Wyatt, who plays off a 2-handicap at the Federal Golf Club, took out the 2019 ACT-Monaro District Championships today at Magpies Belconnen Golf Club.  Only 33 people played in the event with all players (except 1) off a single figure handicap.  The weather was kind, if a little smokey, and the course was in surprisingly good condition, considering the current arid conditions.

Greens were a little slower than at the recent Open, but still running true.  Players had preferred lies on fairways and there were no complaints that the course set up was too hard.

No-one managed to play a par round — Steve and Belconnen member Allan Robertson finished equal 1st on a gross score of 74.  Goulburn’s Scott Nolan threw away a golden chance of winning the event when he 3-putted the 18th hole, but he was not the only one to struggle on this green — there were others who 3 putted the green.

The DGA’s ref for the day — MCC’s Stewart Jones took Steve and Allan to the 1st tee for a sudden death play-off.  Steve followed his towering drive with a 6-iron to the green and two putts to birdie the par 5 hole and win the play-off.

Main results in the Scratch Competition:    1st-Steve Wallace (Fed) 74,    2nd-Allan Robertson (Bel) 74,   3rd-Dom Falk (Goul) 75,  4th-Adam Rogan (Royal) 75,   5th-Scott Nolan (Goul) 75,  6th-Ross Armitage (Yow) 76,  7th-Scott Harris (Gold Ck) 76,  8th-Jonathan Ricks (Quean) 76.

Main results in the Nett Competition:   1st-Allan Robertson (Bel) (5) 69;   2nd-Adam Rogan (Roy) (3) 72;   3rd-Richard Hope (Gold Ck) (8) 72;  4th-Ross Armitage (Yow) (3) 73;  5th-James Brown (Quean) (7) 73.

With this win Steve also leap-frogged Andrew Tharle to win the 2019 Order-of -Merit Scratch Competition to claim the DGA’s “best golfer of the year award”.

All up, Steve Wyatt took home $900 in vouchers from ACT’s Drummond Golf Store (one of the DGA’s major Sponsors), no wonder he looks happy on his way out of the Magpies Club.
