Just on 40 junior golfers played in the DGA’s Annual Classic event at Yowani on a glorious sunny summers day. Unfortunately, no Colts (18 – 23 years old) played. The field was split into two groups – low handicap golfers (h/c <10.4) played a stroke round, whilst the others played a stableford round.

The first group out (David Howard, Belconnen +1, Brett Levier, Federal +1 and Aaron Maxwell, Federal 1) zoomed around the course in just over 3.5 hours and proved conclusively that a fast game is a good game. Brett won the Gross prize and David came runner up.   Brett birdie the par 5 1st and eagled the par 5 10th on his way to a total score of 70 (-2 to par), to just beat David by one shot on 71 (-1 to par). Federal’s Lachlan Chamberlain (off a 2h/c) played in the second group and secured third place in the Gross event with a total score of 74 (+2). Like Brett he birdied the par 5’s 1st and 10th holes, and also the par 5 4th hole, but threw in a few bogies on some of the par 3’s and 4’s to just miss out. Riley Wilcox (Belconnen) and Jack Nesbitt (Fairbairn) — supporting long, flowing locks reminiscent of the 1960’s both played solid rounds to finish equal 4th on 78.

Pan Sukhumparnich (Gungahlin, h/c 10), Kartik Sharma (Queanbeyan, h/c 13) and Silka Solomon (Yowani, h/c10) took out the Nett vouchers for 1st-3rd places with scores of nett 71, 72 and 77.

In the higher handicapped division Fairbairn golfers dominated.   Fairbairn Golf Pro and Junior Coach Leigh Hunter must be doing something special out near the airport. Thomas Lynch (h/c 32) beat Aaron Liu (h/c29) on a count-back as both had scores of 40 points. For Thomas a really strong finishing 3 holes of 4/3, 4/4 and 4/4 helped to offset 8’s (and wipes) on the difficult par 4 7th and 14th holes. His handicap will quickly come down from 32. Aaron’s card suggested he played a bit steadier with only one wipe. Pint-sized Madison Hood (h/c 35) secured 3rd place with 39 points and beat Belconnen’s Darcy McCann(h/c 25) on account back. Madison struggled on some of the par 5’s, with 3 scores of 8/1 and a wipe, but made up for that with 3 holes where she scored 4points and a run of 3 pointers between 11th and 14th holes.

ACT-M DGA’s Junior Manager Gail Goiser had organized Beef Burgers and drinks for all players at the conclusion of their rounds – and these went down very nicely – thanks Gail.

The DGA sincerely thanks the Yowani Club for hosting this event yet again.   DGA Committee members Les Wallace, Barry Morgan and Jim Jackson assisted Gail with the running of the event.
