The first round of the handicap competition was filled with exactly what seasoned golfers expect from this most exiting of match ups. While the juniors produce ever improving scores, the seniors ‘a cagey chess match’, the women an amiable (but behind the scenes, fierce) contest, and the A graders a birdie/eagle extravaganza, the handicap; the Handicap produced its usual excitement!
Played in brilliant sunshine, summer heat and an often brutal southerly wind, the Yowani/Queanbeyan match saw Mitch Connolly come back from 4 down to square his match, and Paul Raiser from 3 down to do the same.
Gungahlin Lakes carded a very creditable win against the boys from the snowy mountains (Coolamatong/Cooma), but only after Mike Hogben smashed a 271 metre drive down 17 (while also smashing his club in two pieces).
In the match between Yowani and Queanbeyan, Patrick Magee (who was giving seven shots away in his match), gets to the 12th hole. Patrick is in the trees on the right; his opponent is on the green for one. Patrick has to give a shot away on this hole. Solution? Patrick sinks the shot. Pure majesty right there, and the essence of Handicap Golf. Stay true believers, and stay tuned for future updates.
