After perfect conditions at Federal last week the golfing gods squared the ledger. It was brutal yesterday with winds in excess of 50kph and approaching 70kph at times.
Round 4 in Division 2 of A Reserve Pennants
Federal got a jump early with a number of matches 2 or 3 up, but soon the conditions took a toll and the encounter evened up.
Rory Ardlie, Federal’s No. 5 got the first point with a 3 and 2 win over Murrumbidgee’s Billy Toy. Federal No. 3 Glen Collins played solidly all day for a 3 and 2 win against Nick Lander. The old warrior, Wally Gregory playing at No. 2 for Federal, secured his match with a 3 and 2 win playing Dean Hill. Federal’s No. 1 Steve Wyatt held on to beat Teague Baldry 1 up, a score matched by his team mate Sam Shadbolt who chipped in from behind the green to win against Peter Gniel. Murrumbidgee secured a half point after a beautiful bunker shot on 18 by Matt Connor saved the match against Federal’s No.3 Will Brearley.
In the final analysis Federal had a good win (5.5 to 0.5) , but the score does not reflect the closeness of many matches and the tenacity of all players in very tough conditions. The win puts Federal equal top of Division 2 with Gold Creek.
In other matches this Round, Gold Creek defeated Cooma/Coolamatong 3.5 to 2.5 and Queanbeyan defeated Fairbairn 5 to 1.
Next week Federal play Queanbeyan at Cooma with Queanbeyan having to win convincingly to keep open their chances of making the semi-finals. Gold Creek will want to defeat Murrumbidgee to secure their semi-final spot.
