ACT Monaro District Golf Stableford Tournament Press Release No. 5
The majority of clubs have now completed their second round of this event and things are certainly hotting up. Clubs still to hold their second rounds are Queanbeyan, Coolabri Country Club, Goulburn, Tully Park, and Coolamatong Snowy Mountains.
The top SIX District qualifiers at this point are:
- Stuart Honeyman Federal on 83 points games of 42/41
- Gordon McLoughlin Magpies Belconnen 81 points 40/41
- D Jones Braidwood 81 points 37/44
- W Richards Braidwood 81 points too 39/42

- Paul Faulkiner Murrumbidgee Country Club 79 points 39/40
- Nev Mathews Yass Golf Club 78 points 40/38
- Greg O’Neill Gungahlin Lakes 77 points 38/39
The Top two Club players in each Club will also progress to the Cooma Final on Sunday December 12th. The leading Club qualifiers to date are:
- Cooma: Phillip Patricks 79 points 40/39
- Magpies Belconnen: Gordon Graham and Ross Kolaric both on 79 points
- Federal Golf Club: Chris Marsden 79 points
- Capital Vikings: Daryl Weiss on 77 points

- Gold Creek : Roger Lye on 76 points and Peter Madigan on 73 points
- Murrumbidgee Country Club: Tom Clews on 73 points
- Yass Golf Club: Mark Holt on 68 points
It must be remembered that it is the player’s top three scores out of their rounds that will decide the finalists. This will be on the basis of the top 6 District players who will be joined by the top two players from each club. However, if a Club has a player who has qualified as a top district player then there is only one player from that club as a club qualifier. There are certainly many players who have a great chance to qualify the scores are very close indeed.
On a very sad note it is we report the death of one of our good friends John McLelland. John was Manager of the Jamieson Branch of Bendigo Bank. On behalf of the District Association and all golfers we extend to his wife Deb and their daughter Emma our deepest sympathy on their very sad loss. Whilst John was a “social” golfer he was keenly interested in the game and hoped one day to be able to take up the challenge of being a Club golfer.

ACT Monaro District Stableford Championship Tournament Press Release No. 4
With over fifteen clubs now having enrolled for this event, eight clubs involving some 800 golfers have completed their first rounds.
Competition is indeed fierce to attain an early start in compiling a good score considering that it is the top three round scores that will decide the fate of the players as to wether they make it to the final at the picturesque and intriguing Cooma Golf Club on Sunday December 12th.
The top six players overall the Clubs will be qualify as District winners whilst each participating club will be represented by their top two scorers.
The top District Qualifier will receive a voucher to the value of $100 so it is worth striving to gain this distinction. In the final the winner will take home a $600 Voucher and will earn for his/her Club the championship perpetual trophy currently held by Yass Golf Club.
Of course all those players who enter in the five rounds of qualifying will be eligible to be entered in the ACTEWAGL sponsored “Lucky Draw” with a lot of very valuable and desirable prizes including the fabulous Gas Bar B Q donated by ACTEWAGL. Golfers should be fit and one way to achieve this and go up the wall is to support our major sponsor Indoor Rock Climbing Academy of Mitchell go rock climbing it is FUN!!!
Bernie of The Charnwood Bell’s Dry Cleaners is also a major sponsor as is the Jamison Branch of the Bendigo Bank and of course the golfer’s friend and advisor GolfLink without these wonderful sponsors this event would not be anywhere near as attractive.
Leading the District at the moment from the submitted scores is Fairbairn’s John Smith: Belconnen’s Mike Fish, and Yass’s Brad Parker all on 44 points. In close pursuit are Federal’s star lady golfer Christine Dobson Cooma’s Paul Crocker, and Capital’s Jock McManus all on 42 points. Christine Dobson has proved that it is
certainly possible for the Ladies to compete with the Men in this type of event WELL DONE Christine keep it going.
It should be borne in mind that these scores are current at the time of going to press but with some seven or eight Clubs yet to hold their first round of qualifying anything can happen and most likely will.

Kev Chapman

District Stableford Tournament June Report
With Cooma Golf Club and Magpies Belconnen having completed their second round of the Tournament things are looking decidedly interesting. Leading the field at this stage with rounds of 40 and 41 is Belconnen’s personable Gordon McLoughlin on 81 Points (incidentally he is also a good golfer.) Pressing his claim for the top spot is Cooma’s “Mr Consistency”, Jacob Levy on 80 points (rounds of 39 & 41) 79 Points sees Cooma’s Phillip Patricks (40/39) and Belconnen’s Gordon Graham(36/43) & Ross Kolaric (39/40) pressing their claims. Whilst Ian Kay and Jason Rose are staking their position with 77 points a piece. Gordon Graham’s 43 points was among the highest recorded to date in this round and certainly went a long way to putting him among the leaders. The question is can all these players keep it up as there are lots of players from all the other Clubs that can perform as well and perhaps even better.
Queanbeyan Club will commence their rounds shortly and they will certainly along with the District’s newest member Club Goolabri Country Club provide some fairly stiff competition. One cannot discount Royal Canberra, Gold Creek and Yowani Golf Clubs which have yet to nominate but they always provide very tough competition and it is certain that they will again be prominent in the final should they decide to enter.
Capital Vikings have just completed their first round and as expected there have been some sensational scores recorded. Ms P. Hill leads the Ladies with a great round yielding her 41 points whilst happy Jock McManus has even more cause to smile with his 42 points. Phill English and Darryl Weiss not to be outdone each recorded 41 points these scores certainly place them among the early District leaders of round one. Tournament Director Kev Chapman is expecting some 1500 entries and he will be very disappointed if that number is not achieved or bettered after all there is no entry fee and lots of great prizes even if a player fails to qualify there is always the “Lucky Draw”
